November Herb of the Month
Common Name
Standardized: yerba santa

Botanical Name
Eriodictyon californicum (Hook. & Arn.) Torr.

Plant Family: Hydrophyllaceae

Yerba santa is a sticky-leafed evergreen native to the southwestern United States. Unlike many other astringent herbs, yerba santa actually has a pleasant taste. It is used as a food flavoring and as an additive to herbal syrups to disguise the taste of other ingredients. It was given its name ("holy weed") by Spanish priests impressed with its properties.

Parts Used
Dried leaves.

Typical Preparations
Can be used as a tea, but must be allowed to steep for at least half an hour to dissolve the resins. More often used as an alcohol tincture.
Medicinal Action and Uses---Expectorant and sedative, with an action resembling atropine. It has been recommended in cystitis and catarrh of the bladder, but its principal use is in bronchial catarrh, especially when there is any asthmatic tendency. It relieves dyspnoea due to heart disease, has been successfully employed in whooping cough, and as a local application in rhus poisoning, burns, genito-urinary catarrh, etc. As its active principle is excreted from the kidneys, it sometimes produces signs of renal irritation; in chronic catarrh of the bladder it stimulates the mucous membrane.

Specific: No known precautions.

General: We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.

The Tongva call it Huherhetchut. They boil the leaves into a strong tea to relieve
coughs and sore throats. The same preparation also serves for stomachaches
and diarrhea, as well as a tonic or blood purifier.

For rheumatism, the Tongva make a liniment from leaves and stems. They also
use fresh leaves to produce a poultice, which they apply on the skin for sores,
insect bites, and the rash from poison oak.

The Tongva also use the plant for non-medicinal purposes. They make a mild
weak tea from dried leaves to obtain a refreshing drink. The leaves are chewed
as a thirst quencher. The Tongva also smoke the dried leaves as tobacco and
hang branches in the sweathouses for general purification.* I've also made this pumpkin gingerbread using gluten-free flour from King Arthur. Turned out great!

Horoscope title
Aries: Life is exciting as lovely Venus starts the month in adventurous Sagittarius. What's on your bucket list? It's never too early (or late) to start doing the things you want to do, Aries. Life might take you to some pretty interesting places this month if you're open to new experiences.

Taurus:  It’s time to learn more about love and money while Venus spends time in open minded, adventurous Sagittarius starting on November 1. Truth and higher meaning are something you’re searching for now, and you never know when and where you’ll find it. Remain open to new experiences and advice.

Gemini:  You'd love more power during the Mars-Pluto square on November 5, but something or someone is standing in your way. Avoid confrontation and power struggles as much as possible now, Gemini. No matter how frustrated you get, letting your anger get the better of you isn't the answer.

Cancer:What will the full moon in patient Taurus bring on November 12? Hopefully, it will give you peace of mind that things will happen when they’re meant to, Cancer. If you’ve been nervous or anxious about a certain event, this full moon should help lay your worries to rest.

Leo: When love goddess Venus enters fellow fire sign Sagittarius on November 1, you love a great adventure, and you'll follow your crush or true love to the ends of the earth to be with them. This can also have an exciting effect on the rest of the your life, Leo, so don't hesitate to say yes the next time someone invites you to do something amazing.

Virgo: When competitive Mars squares off with transformational Pluto on November 5, you have some serious decisions to make, Virgo. If you opt to play it safe, you might miss an important opportunity. If you put it all on the line, there will be inevitable power struggles as you go up against your competitors. Take whichever path lets you sleep better at night.

Libra: Loving Venus enjoys her time in easygoing Sagittarius starting on November 1, and you should, too. Your mind is open to new experiences, and you approach life in a friendly but straightforward way. You don't have a lot on your to-do list, but you love to keep busy performing spontaneous random acts of kindness.

Scorpio:  When your co-rulers Mars and Pluto square off on November 5, there are power struggles galore. You have a strong urge to accomplish your objectives, but you can*t seem to do that without running into obstacles. You don't live for controversy or confrontation, but you aren't about to let go of something you really want without a fight.

Sagittarius:   When Pluto goes direct in practical Capricorn on October 3, you get a little bit of the power back that you might have felt you lost when the planet was retrograde. This powerful combination puts you back in the drivers seat, especially if you aren't afraid to dig deep and tackle some of your inner issues.

Capricorn: The sun sextiles your home planet Saturn on November 8, giving you a chance to show off your perseverance. When you set your mind to something, you rarely stop until you get it. Focus on long-term goals now.

Aquarius:  Loving Venus enters outgoing Sagittarius on November 1, so you’re ready to get the party started. No one is left off your invite list either, Aquarius, since you’ll be in a “the more the merrier” kind of mood.

Pisces: It's time to learn more about love and money while Venus spends time in open minded, adventurous Sagittarius starting on November 1. Truth and higher meaning are something you're searching for now, and you never 'know when and where you'll find it. Remain open to new experiences and advice.
