Letter for the editor mar
Greetings!

Here we are already into March, with St. Patrick's day approaching in 17 days.

Lots of things have happened already this year, and it's only 3 months old.  In light of where our country is heading, I would ask everyone to work on keeping a positive attitude, and join with me to begin a campaign on paying it forward, so we can begin  bringing good things into our lives.

This month we are featuring our CBD oil, in an effort to bring healing into the lives of our customers, Please refer to page 4 for more information.

We are featuring Hops for the herb of the month, and have several recipe's you can try and InJoy.

We know that since it's St. Patrick's month, Hops goes with Beer,  :-) and you will have fun with this herb

Wishing you lots of joy, and love , we will see you next month.

St. Patricks Day
Herb of the month title
Hops
Also known as- Lupulus strobula. European Hops, and Lupulin.

Introduction:  A "hop" is a green cone around the female flower of the hop plant. Inside the hops are golden grains that form a sticky greenish yellow to organ-yellow powder.
Hops have been used for centuries to flavor beer, but they have been used even longer to aid sleep and to reduce libido. In fifteenth-century Germany, monks prescribed teas of hops to young males to help them remain chaste.

Constituents:
Up to 80% of grains of hops is a bitter resin. There are also tannins, flavonoid antioxidants, lupulone, and humulene.

Parts Used:  The cone and grains of the hops flower, dried and cut.

Typical Preparations:  Teas, infusions, tinctures, or encapsulations. Is also popularly used in dream and sleep pillows and many other cosmetic formulations.

Summary:
Hops are sedating, but the chemicals responsible for this effect (humulone and lupulone) are strongest after an aging process of about 6 months to 2 years, which is the time required for them to form their sedative chemicals. Fresh hops provide bitters that stimulate digestion; these bitters are also found in the aged herb. In folk medicine, washes made with hops and waters are often used to treat sores and skin injuries. Hops teas are also used to relieve the pain of bladder infections. The hops used in beer are used "fresher," so drinking beer does not have the same effect as taking hops as an herb.
The German food chemist Udo Pollmer notes that soaking red or white meats in beer, before grilling, reduces the formation of cancer-causing HCA's (heterocyclic amines), and actually prevents the formation of these compounds, although "lite" or alcohol-free beers do not have this effect. Another way to avoid the HCA's, of course, is to serve vegan entrees.

Precautions:
The hops in beer are responsible for an unfortunate condition in men known in German herbal medicine as "beer drinker's droop," or erectile dysfunction. Avoiding excessive consumption of beer or hops helps men retain potency.

Hops to help you sleep

When the hop plant was first discovered in Egypt in the first century, its first use was as a medicinal herb! Over the years the hops have been used as cures for many things in herbal medicine but its most popular use has been in hop pillows for the relief of insomnia. The potential sleep properties of hops were first discovered when hop-pickers started to fall asleep on the job and for a long time this was known as Hop pickers fatigue! The bitter acids and volatile oils of the hop flowers (or cones) produce a sedative effect which calms the nerves, relaxes you and helps you to fall asleep - as revealed by Kew-trained botanist James Wong on the BBC hit show Grow your Own Drugs. Three to four handfuls of hop cones in a breathable organza bag, with an equal measure of lavender to sweeten the scent slightly, make the perfect natural sleep aide. As the lupulin in the hop flowers can stain it is best to slip the organza bag into a purpose made mini pillow to protect your best bed linen! Give it a squeeze before you pop it under your pillow for a relaxing night*s sleep.

Sleep Stones
Each colour stone contains a different blend of hops and lavender to allow you to tailor the scent to fit your mood. These beautifully soft handmade felt balls are filled with hops and lavender that are ready to squeeze before you rest your head.

Pot O' Gold
Hops for Brewing

Traditionally grown in the counties of Kent and Hereford, brewers prefer UK hops as our farmers usually grow seeded varieties that are best suited for real ale or beer lager beers use a different seedless hop grown in other countries in Europe.
It is the hops that add the bitterness and aroma to beer.
Kent is known for two famous breweries, Whitbread Fremlins and Shepherd Neame, both used hops grown locally on their own hop farms around Sittingbourne and Faversham. Whitbread closed its Faversham brewery in the 1990*s but Shepherd Neame has been brewing continuously since 1698 longer than any other brewery in Britain.
To buy loose dried hops to add to your brew
Before we started Essentially Hops, all the hops grown on our farm were supplied for brewing...... most of our hops went to Bass Charrington and Truman beers. Now that we specialise in growing hops for decoration, less of our crop are sold for brewing but we do have a limited supply of plump unpressed dried hop cones that we "liberate" from the kiln at hop picking before they get pressed into hop pockets.
Dry hopping, with loose hops will give more flavor and aroma to your final beer.
We sell these plump, unpressed hop cones in small 100g bags or by the Kg.

Hops for Medicinal Purposes

When we first started in business in 1990, we were inundated with interest from people who thought what we were attempting to do was wonderful. We raised awareness of the demise of the English hop growing industry and so many people came to visit us with fond memories of their childhood and days hop picking, when the industry was at it greatest. People were so generous we were given family momentos, photos and memorabilia to display. One lovely lady provided us with a handwritten list of recipes, which are detailed below:

Tinctures were created using hops that were supposed to help reduce painful swelling, bruises and boils. Compresses that would reduce neuralgia & rheumatic pains. Various tonics that would purify the blood, reduce nervousness, and hysteria, as well as stimulate a sluggish liver and stimulate the appetite. Hops are also said to also help with diseases of the chest & throat.

Holistic CBD Title
What is CBD?

CBD is shorthand for cannabidiol, one of more than one hundred cannabinoids present in cannabis, and 'industrial' hemp, grown for hempseed, hempseed oil, and fiber. The amounts of certain cannabinoids, along with other constituents such as terpenes, ketones, and aldehydes, to name a few (found in hemp essential oil) account for the wide variety of effects of various cannabis strains.

Hemp, which is legal in all 50 states, contains a relatively high concentration of CBD, and only trace amounts of other cannabinoids such as THC, CBN, etc. This allows for the CO2-extraction of CBD, and the formulation of CBD-containing blends used via oral ingestion.

CBD has none of the effects commonly associated with 'pot'. It doesn't get one 'high', though it has been researched for many potential health benefits. Researchers have found it to have potent anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and neuro-protective actions. The list of conditions CBD has been shown to positively benefit is long, and further information can be found throughout the Internet.

Our CBD oil formulas contain 1mg of CBD per each two drops. The ideal serving size for different users and circumstances is not exactly known. One study seems to indicate that a 2mg serving of CBD produced similar effects of a 200mg serving. We encourage individuals to experiment with their intake to find what is suitable for them.

How Does CBD Work?

Our bodies have their own endogenous cannabinoids and receptors. While the actual mechanisms of action of CBD are not yet completely understood. It appears that, while CBD does not bind to these receptors, it may prevent the breakdown of our own endogenous cannabinoids, thereby enhancing their activity.
For more information on health conditions where CBD has been the used in scientic research see www.projectcbd.org for more.

Happy 2016 everyone! Its hard to believe that 2015 is over - frankly, I couldn’t wait until it was over.  There was difficulty, elation, fun and a lot of growth this last year.  There was, as most of you know, a health scare that could have made a huge impact on my life - but everything turned out for the best!  Because of the positive outcome of that situation, I have been going ahead with some fabulous plans for the future!  I can’t tell you how excited I am to continue my business into the 26th year; its been the best of all possible worlds, and I truly love what I do!
