herb for Dec- Yerba Santa
Yerba Santa-Eriodictyon californicum

Parts Used: leaf

Other common names: California yerba santa, consumptive's weed, mountain balm, grindelia

The leaves of this *holy herb* clear mucus, relieve coughing, and speed the healing of urinary tract infections.

Medicinal Uses:   Yerba santa leaves warm and stimulate the respiratory system; reduce inflammation in the sinuses, throat, and lungs; and dry excessive secretions of the lungs or upper respiratory tract. Take the leaf tincture to relieve chronic asthma, bronchitis, or seasonal allergies accompanied by copious and easily expectorated mucus discharge, but keep in mind that yerba santa leaves can be very astringent. If taken in higher doses' more than about 45 drops*the drying effect may make your tongue feel like it's been wrung out, but if taken in smaller doses, you will find that yerba santa first gently dries and then remoistens and refreshes the mucous membranes.   The cooled tea or the tincture in room temperature water speeds the healing of urinary tract infections characterized by mucus discharge. The tea drunk hot or the tincture in hot water promotes sweating and increases circulation to the extremities and the surface of the skin.

Also known as:  consumptive's weed, yerba santa leaf has a history of use for treating tubercular cough and wasting away. Its high flavonoid content, represented by its sweet taste, points to its ability to nourish, build, and maintain the integrity of tissues.

Yerba santa has a very interesting taste characteristic it starts out bitter and slowly gets sweeter. It teaches us how to find sweetness in the bitter experiences of life by bringing awareness to the initiatory power of trauma. In a similar way through its association with fire, yerba santa aligns us with the myth of the phoenix rising from the ashes.

Burn the leaves as smudge to purify spaces and to clear heavy or dark energies from people. Crush the leaves and add them to herbal smoking mixes to help clear mucus from the lungs.

Cautions:  Yerba santa is usually safe when it is orally taken, but the security of making use of yerba santa from a topical stand point is not quite known as of yet. There are no reports of significant side effects from making use of yerba santa when applied to the skin or taken orally. Yerba santa is one herb to avoid throughout pregnancy.

Yerba Santa Benefits, Uses and Effects

Smudging:  Smudging is a traditional Native American practice where herbs are burned as incense for various purporses. Yerba Santa is often one of several herbs used in infant smudge bundles used to bring health to young children as well as in ceremonial smudge bundles used to honor ancestors, increase physic abilities, and bring health and protection. The bundle would be burned and allowed to smolder during this process. While not tested scientifically, many people who purchase smudge bundles claim that burning them creates a calming environment that releases negative energy.

Asthma:
Native Americans would often smoke or chew the leaves as a treatment for asthma. A tonic or tea made from the leaves of the plant is also useful for treating chronic asthma, and this method was frequently used by early European settlers in the western U.S. Although research in this area is lacking, many people who purchase Yerba Santa supplements and extracts claim that they found using Yerba Santa was more effective and easier to administer than typical asthma treatments. In many cases customers say that a single drop helps ease the symptoms of asthma anywhere from 4 to 24 hours.

Allergies:
Although there is not much research in this area, Yerba Santa is useful in clearing out the mucus caused by allergies and ridding the body of perpetually congested sinuses. It is also said to augment the flow of urine, detoxifying the body of allergens. Many customers say that the herb is very useful in treating allergies when used in tea. Additionally, nasal sprays are also very popular among those who use the herb, and many say it is very effective in providing relief to a dry, irritated nose. Providing this moisture to the nasal passage also allows the nose to clear out trapped allergens.

Cough:
Research supporting a patent in the late 1980s through the early 1990s also suggests that using an aerosol spray made from a Yerba Santa extract can prevent dryness of the mucosal membranes of the upper and lower respiratory tract. This in turn prevents the lungs from the irritation of bacteria and reduces coughing. Further research shows that the plant can reduce the amount of phlegm produced by the lungs while also addressing inflammation of the mucus-producing tissues, making it great for clearing up the *moist* parts of a cold, like runny noses. Testimony also suggests it is great for treating persistent coughs that did not respond to other medications.

Bronchitis:
Yerba Santa was often used as a common medical practice to treat bronchitis starting in the early 1800s up until the 1960s, until laws became more stringent. Because of this there is unclear scientific evidence for this use. Many still use a Yerba Santa poultice to treat lung conditions like bronchitis by placing damp leaves on the chest. Many who have purchased Yerba Santa extracts say that it is very effective in relieving tightness in the chest brought on by bronchitis.

Cancer:
A study conducted in 1992 was able to isolate twelve compounds called flavonoids that inhibited the growth of cancer cells in cultured hamster embryos. From this study, they concluded that the plant may be able act as a cancer preventative therapy, and thus it warrants further study on live animals. From this study, they were also able to determine that the plant also contains an antibiotic compound called eriodictyol.

Digestion:
As traditionally used by Native Americans, the leaves of Yerba Santa would be rolled into a ball and then chewed in order to promote saliva production. This excess saliva contains digestive enzymes that help to orally digest food, then ease an upset stomach, and improve digestive function. The herb is also thought to help increase appetite, improve bowel movements, and reduce gas and bloating. Although most people who purchase Yerba Santa products do so with the intentions of treating respiratory conditions, testimony suggests that many also see improvements in the digestive system as well.

Mouth:
The excess saliva produced when chewing Yerba Santa makes it effective in treating chronic dry mouth. Additionally, the sweet taste produced by the leaves is also effective in treating foul breath. Aside from chewing the raw leaves, oral sprays made from Yerba Santa are available, and reviews of those sprays are mixed, with some suggesting that they prevent oral dryness brought on by sleeping, and with others saying the effects are not long lasting. Clinical studies show that Yerba Santa based oral sprays can provide relief for up to two hours after use. Spray formulas also tend to be designed to prevent tooth decay as well.duction assists the digestive process and may relieve some digestive difficulties.

Fatigue:
Since the herb acts as a stimulant it decreases fatigue and curbs the desire to eat.

Leaf Tea
Standard infusion

Because resins are not soluble in water, yerba santa leaf is best prepared as a tincture for its
mucus-clearing and respiratory-stimulating effects.

Drink 3*4 fluid ounces up to 5 times per day.

Yerba Santa Leaf Tincture

  • 1 part dried leaf
  • 5 parts menstruum (65 percent alcohol, 35 percent distilled water)

I prefer making the tincture with dried leaves because theafresh leaves tend to clump up, making it more difficult to get a full extraction.

Take 10*30 drops up to 5 times per day.

USE IT ON YOUR ALTER

Yerba Santa, also called HOLY HERB and SACRED HERB has entered hoodoo via Mexico, by way of  practitioners of curandismo, the Mexican herbal healing and magical arts.

Because the name YERBA SANTA means *holy herb,* it has a long history of use as an Altar Offering.

One way to employ it in this fashion if to place a handful of dried YERBA SANTA in an open dish on the altar, mixed with Blessed Thistle, Angelica (Holy Ghost Root), Cascara Sagrada
(Sacred Bark), Basil (Sacred Basil), and any other herbs or roots whose names contain the words

'holy,' 'sacred,' or 'blessed.'

This is said to bring spiritual aid to the home

If you have ever felt as though some unseen being was preventing you from succeeding in life, sabotaging every attempt at happiness, then you know first hand how horrible bad karma can be. We*re not perfect, and for that reason, there is no way to avoid bad karma altogether. However, it*s important to note that you hold the powers as to what karma you experience at any given moment.

The theory of karma states that whatever actions you take in this life, you will ultimately either be rewarded or punished. Therefore, if you live a life of goodness, you will prosper as you are rewarded for the positivity that you have introduced into this world. However, if you choose to embrace your darker side, making decisions that may be painful for those around us, or bowling over others in our efforts to obtain true personal gain, prepare yourself.

If you are currently suffering the effects of bad karma in your life, you are likely seeking a solution. Good news. While you can*t undo the errors that you have made, you can take steps to shift your energy and, with it, the karma that you will experience moving forward.

Here are 7 tips to free yourself from bad karma and welcome happiness and positivity into your life:

#1 -Always Be Patient
Look around you for a moment. We have become an *instant gratification* society where everyone expects to receive everything they want at a moment' notice. This attitude can set you up for failure as your attention is 100% on what youre hoping to get and how you plan on getting it.

This leads you to overlook the here and now, taking the people in your life for granted. Don't make that mistake. Instead, take a step back, enjoy the present and be patient about what' to come.

#2 -Say Goodbye to Toxic Connections
Your karma isn't only affected by your own energy, but also by that of the people that you choose to entertain in your life. For this reason, if you were to allow someone into your life that was highly negative or toxic, they could bring bad karma upon you, even if you were a positive person.
Take a step back and carefully look at the relationships in your life. If you are engaging with a toxic individual, it*s time to sever ties and free yourself from their influence.

#3- Spread Love and Happiness
A good way to determine the karma that one is going to experience is by looking at the energy that we are putting out into the world. If we bring negativity and pain to others anytime we are near, that is inevitably going to bring bad karma.

Meanwhile, we can shift that karma by instead focusing on bringing peace, love, and compassion. This is the basis of the *Law of Attraction*, stating that whatever you put out into the world is what you will ultimately receive in return.

#4-Remain Positive
Your mind is the control panel for your life, holding the power to determine how you are going to act or react to any given situation. Therefore, the thoughts you choose to entertain can have a profound impact on your life. If you allow yourself to think negatively, you are setting yourself up to attract negativity, a self-fulfilling prophecy.

However, if you are willing to turn that thinking around, you can set yourself up to make smarter, positive choices in life. These choices will ultimately influence your karma.

#5-Apologize to Those You Have Wronged
Never underestimate the power of a genuine apology. Not one that you say simply because you feel as though its the *right thing to do*, but one that comes from the heart. Karma isn't fooled by empty words and meaningless gestures.

You need to look deep within your heart and find true remorse for the way that you have wronged someone or the mistake that you have made. Only then will you free yourself from the bad karma that it brought upon your life.

#6 -Perform a Random Act of Kindness
As we previously established, your karma is going to be influenced by what you put out into the world and what you do for others. For this reason, a random act of kindness is like the ultimate act in terms of altering your karma.

Not only are you spreading positive energy, but you are using your own resources (time, energy, money) to bring happiness to another. Look within yourself, however, to make sure you are doing this for good reasons and not just to manipulate karma, as that wouldn't work.

#7 -Always Keep Learning
Everything that we experience in life is a learning opportunity. Your karma is rarely brought upon your life by one random, isolated incident. Instead, it is the product of many wrong choices and ongoing mistakes, with no care for how these choices may bring pain to others.

However, if you see every moment as the opportunity to learn yet another life lesson, you can grow and evolve from these experiences. This will help you to avoid making the same mistake twice, as you learned from it the first time, empowering you to turn your energy around. Doing so puts you in the right position to turn bad karma around so as to welcome good karma into your life.
