Health Benefits of Fennel

Fennel May Help with Stomach/Gut Discomfort
Fennel has a long history of being used to treat a variety of gut and digestive problems, including stomach aches, flatulence, diarrhea, and constipation.
There are few studies that support these benefits. This doesn't mean that the benefits are not there, just that few have studied them. Fennel seed oil reduces intestinal spasms and increases gut flow
Anethole, a major component of essential fennel oil, improved stomach function and emptying in rats (these are impaired in functional dyspepsia).
Fennel extract prevented stomach ulcers caused by alcohol in rats .

Fennel Helps with Infantile Colic
*Colic* is the term used to refer to when young children cry or are in a state of distress for several hours a day. The causes are unknown, but it is widely believed that stomach cramps and other digestive issues play a key role.  Because fennel is known to have a soothing effect on the gastrointestinal system, it has a long history as a folk remedy for infantile colic. This use has also been backed up by science.

Fennel Mimics Estrogen
Fennel has estrogen-like activity (it is estrogenic).
Because of this, it can reduce menstrual pains, alleviates symptoms of menopause, and increases libido .

Fennel Relieves Menstrual Pain;
Fennel capsules shortened the length of the menstruation cycle, reduced period-related nausea, and improved subjective well-being in 40 young women compared to a group receiving placebo treatment.  Combination of fennel extract/vitamin E was more effective than ibuprofen in decreasing the intensity of menstrual pain in 68 female students.

Fennel May Help with PM
This herb reduced the severity of symptoms in 90 young women with moderate to severe PMS .

Fennel Is Beneficial in Menopause
Menopause is often accompanied by symptoms such as hot flashes, sweating, heart discomfort, sleep problems, depression, irritability, fatigue, anxiety, sexual problems, and joint and muscle discomfort.
In a triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 90 women, fennel effectively reduced menopausal symptoms without serious side

Fennel Has Antioxidant Effects
This herb is an abundant source of antioxidants such as caffeoylquinic acid, quercetin, and other phenolic and flavonoid compounds.  Three weeks of fennel supplementation increased the activity of important antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase in rats .

Fennel Is Good for the Skin
A cream containing fennel extract improved skin texture and increased skin water content in 11 volunteers.  Fennel extract may prevent the visible effects of skin aging that come from sun exposure. For example, it increased the production of collagen, elastin, and TGF-beta1 levels in mice exposed to UVB radiation. Furthermore, it dose-dependently decreased the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by increasing Nrf2 and antioxidants such as GSH

 Fennel May Help Reduce Inflammation
Fennel extract has significant anti-inflammatory effects in rats and mice. It also prevents slow allergic reactions (type IV allergic hypersensitivity). This herb suppressed inflammation in mice with lung injury, by decreasing the production of the inflammatory cytokines IL-6, TNF-alpha, and the inflammatory agents MMP9 and nitric oxide (NO) .

Fennel contains several major ingredients that are inhibitors of 5-LOX, an enzyme that causes inflammatory and allergic responses in the body by producing leukotrienes. Fennel*s ability to inhibit these enzymes may make it useful for preventing inflammatory and allergic reactions .  Anethole, found in fennel, decreased inflammatory cytokines IL-1beta and TNF-alpha in a rat model of periodontitis (inflammation of the gums) .

Aries:  Your sometimes tactless manner subsides slightly now that communicative Mercury has just turned direct in soft-spoken Cancer. Your pace is far less rushed than usual as you focus on making loved ones feel comfortable, valued, and loved with your kind words. Destiny is on your side as lucky Jupiter goes direct on August 11, so don*t dismiss the opportunities it presents.  Your home planet Mars enters structured Virgo on the eighteenth, so you*re ready, willing, and able to power through whatever*s on your plate.

Taurus: If you*ve been tripping over your words lately, Mercury now direct in soft-spoken Cancer is the break you*ve been waiting for. You don*t always know the perfect thing to say, but at least you don*t have the forces of the universe working against you anymore. Your home planet Venus trines lucky Jupiter on August 8, bringing a general feeling of optimism. This can be a great time to take the next step in your love life or make an aggressive investment.   Powerful Mars enters routine-loving Virgo on the eighteenth, increasing your urge to follow a very structured plan.

Gemini: Your home planet Mercury is now direct in sensitive Cancer, which should help you get your feelings back on track. If you*ve recently said the wrong thing to a friend or lover, a heartfelt apology does wonders now. Mercury pairs up with the feisty Lion on the eleventh, giving you the confidence to say what*s on your mind in a direct and loud manner. You can look forward to successfully changing things up during the Mercury-Uranus square on August 16, because while the sudden increase in the day*s energy can trip up some people, you thrive on a faster pace.

Cancer: Conversational Mercury is now traveling forward in your creative sign. Your words not only have more feeling and compassion now, but you*re much less likely to encounter miscommunications that lead to arguments and hurt feelings.  There*s a lot to be hopeful about during the positive Venus-Jupiter trine on the eighth, especially if you*ve been waiting for news concerning a pending situation. It should be a nice surprise to hear that everything is on track or, better yet, completed ahead of schedule. Your ruler moon is full in eccentric Aquarius on the fifteenth, encouraging you to come out of your shell and do something out of the ordinary.

Leo:  When fortunate Jupiter turns direct on August 11, good luck helps take you where you want to go. You*re capable of plenty on your own, but why not take advantage of fate when it*s on your side?  Talkative Mercury enters your own creative sign on that day, and since it*s out of its retrograde stage, you should be able to have normal conversations and count on texts and e-mails getting to where they*re supposed to go.  The sun leaves your fiery sign for safer earth-sign Virgo on the twenty-third, so things will be less spontaneous and much better thought out.  There can be comfort and satisfaction in routine.

Virgo:  Your ruler Mercury is finally direct in sensitive Cancer as the month begins, bringing communication issues back to a state of normalcy. If you*ve had misunderstandings with someone in the past several weeks, this is a good time to sincerely apologize or graciously receive an apology from someone else. Powerful Mars enters your organized sign on August 18, so getting things done is your number one priority. Your take-charge attitude can be intimidating, but you*re just trying to make sure the job gets done and gets done right. Organization is your best friend now.  The more practical the gesture, the more meaningful it is to you.

With Mercury now direct in soft-spoken Cancer at the start of the month, you explore deeper connections with the people you care about. Talking about important issues with your BFF helps strengthen your already amazing bond.  If you*ve been regretting an opportunity that you let slip by in the last several months, you might get another crack at it when Jupiter goes direct on August 11. Quirky Uranus turns retrograde that same day, so watch out for self-destructive habits to rise to the surface. You*re the only one who can make major changes in your life, Libra, and the time to take the first step is now.

Scorpio:  Mercury is direct in fellow water sign Cancer when the month begins, opening the lines of communication again for the first time in weeks. You*re more willing to share personal things now, but only with the people you feel closest to. Trust, as always, is a key issue.  Eccentric Uranus goes retrograde on August 11, which challenges you to question what you believe. If you*re like most fixed-sign Scorpios, you have firm opinions on most topics, but looking at things from a new perspective could change your mind.

Sagittarius:   Breathe a sigh of relief as the complications brought on by Mercury retrograde are lifted now that this chatty planet is direct in sensitive Cancer. This is a good time to have a heart-to-heart chat with someone you*ve felt disconnected from lately.  Lucky Jupiter goes direct on August 11, giving you time to thank your lucky stars. What are the things you*ve been taking for granted lately? This is a great time to start a gratitude journal or write thank-you notes to the people who*ve made a difference in your life.

Capricorn: The challenge of the Venus-Uranus square on August 2 is how to balance your increased need for excitement and newness with the things you must deal with on an everyday basis. Every moment can*t be filled with *wow,* but there*s nothing wrong with celebrating the extraordinary among the ordinary.  Communicative Mercury leaves sensitive Cancer for outgoing Leo on the eleventh, which gives you a chance to announce your intentions loudly and clearly. If you*ve been feeling taken advantage of lately, this is the perfect moment to reclaim your time and let people know you aren*t going to take it anymore.

Aquarius:  Your home planet Uranus goes retrograde on August 11, so some of your eccentric behavior might subside while you try to figure out why some of these obstacles have been put in your way lately. You can take some responsibility for the way things are now, but try to avoid placing most of the blame on yourself.  A full moon in your sign on the fifteenth really brings out your humanitarian side, so finding a charity to get involved with is on the top of your to-do list. If you*ve already found a good cause, plan on spending a significant amount of time and/or money on it now

Pisces:  Communicative Mercury is now direct in kindred water sign Cancer, which makes it easier for you to express what*s in your heart. If you*ve been waiting to tell someone how you feel, it*s easier to open up now than it has been in previous weeks. There*s a lot to think about at the start of a lucky Jupiter direct period starting August 11, especially if you have regrets over how you handled things in the past several months. When life gives you a second chance to make things right, it*s those opportunities that shouldn*t be ignored.
