Letter for the editor October
Greetings,

We are now into the last three months of this year.  The trees are putting on their fall dress, and bringing about breath taking views for us to enjoy.  Leaves are beginning to fall and for some of us we are enjoying more crisp morning, and cooler afternoons.

We here at Caer and Dee's place are beginning to decide how to decorate the store for the holidays, and thinking about what we can bring in for you to enjoy buying for your gifts for Christmas.

Along with all the crsip mornings some of you are experiencing sore throats and colds.  We have the natural remedies for those.  Please check out our cold season solutions.

Come in and check us out!  Visit our website:

Herb of the month title
Golden Seal
Also known as- Hydrastis Canadensis, orange root, yellow root, Yellow Puccoon. Ground Raspberry. Wild Curcuma. Turmeric Root. Indian Dye. Eye Root. Eye Balm. Indian Paint. Jaundice Root, and Warnera.

Introduction:
Goldenseal is a woody herb native to northeastern North America, though it has been on the endangered plants list since 1991. The plant has a long history of medicinal use among the Native Americans of that region as an antibiotic and treatment for colds and stomach complaints. More recently, it has gained a reputation as an immune system enhancer, though more research is needed to confirm those claims. The active constituents in goldenseal include berberine, which has proven to be an effective broad spectrum antibiotic when extracted from the roots and leaves of the goldenseal plant.

Constituents: hydrastine, berberine, berberastine, canadine, candaline, and hydrastinine, fatty acids, resin, polyphenolic acids, meconin, chlorogenic acid, phytosterins and a small amount of volatile oil

Parts Used: Leaves and Root

Typical Preparations: Tea infusion, tincture and sometimes found encapsulated.

Summary: Goldenseal leaves can be made into a tea which has a tonic effect on the internal organ and may reduce inflammation in upper respiratory and digestive infections and conditions. A decoction of goldenseal leaf is sometimes used as a douche to treat trichomonas and yeast infections, and is also effective to treat thrush and other gum infections.

Precautions: Because goldenseal contains berberine which stimulates contractions, it should not be used during pregnancy. It may also raise blood pressure and should not be used by those with hypertension.

Some of the most important health benefits of stinging nettle include its ability to detoxify the body, improve metabolic efficiency, boost immune health, increase circulation, improve energy levels, manage menstruation, minimize menopausal symptoms, heal skin conditions, protect kidney and gallbladder health, lower inflammation, increase muscle mass, regulate hormonal activity, prevent diabetes, lower blood pressure, soothe hemorrhoids, and improve respiratory conditions.

Stinging Nettle

This herbaceous flowering plant may be considered as an annoyance to many when they brush against its sharp, stinging leaves, but for thousands of years, people around the world have used stinging nettle to treat a wide variety of health conditions.
The scientific name of stinging nettle is Urtica dioica, and the plant is one of six subspecies within the Urtica genus. The native range of stinging nettle, also known as common nettle in some places, is extensive, including Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. The plant itself is relatively small, rarely growing past five feet in height. The leaves and stems in some of the subspecies have long stinging hairs that inject an array of chemicals when touched, including histamine, formic acid, serotonin, and acetylcholine. This produces an irritating, uncomfortable sensation in the skin, which is why some of the other common names for stinging nettle are burn weed and burn nettle.
However, once you boil these stems and leaves, or extract the powerful oils, the stinging substances are neutralized and the real benefits of the plant can be enjoyed. Some cultures even make nettle soup or include it in cheese-making to add some healthy boosts to their meals. Stinging nettle leaves are most commonly brewed as a tea, which captures many of the most essential health benefits, but the plant can also be applied topically in the form of an oil extract.

However, be sure to combine this natural oil with carrier oils, as it can be extremely potent. As more and more research is done on stinging nettle, it is becoming even more popular, as the diverse range of its proven medicinal effects is impressive, to say the least. Now, let*s take a closer look at the many health benefits of stinging nettle.

Health Benefits of Stinging Nettle

Detoxify the Body:
The wide range of beneficial nutrients found in stinging nettle make it an ideal detoxifier for the body and it has been known to gently cleanse the body of toxins. As a diuretic substance, stinging nettle can also ensure that those toxins being neutralized in the body are then eliminated quickly. Stinging nettle is also known as an alterative, meaning that it can improve the nutrient uptake efficiency of the gut and ensure that the digestive processes run smoothly, thereby preventing the accumulation of dangerous toxins. It also stimulates the lymphatic system, helping to rid the body of excess toxins in the kidneys as well.

Pregnancy Aid: Stinging nettle tea is often suggested for women who are undergoing excessively painful labor, and it can also help protect against excessive bleeding, as it can act as a coagulant. Furthermore, stinging nettle will help to stimulate the production of milk and make lactation easier for the newborn.

Menstruation and Menopause:
Stinging nettle has a number of active components that affect feminine health. For painful premenstrual symptoms, stinging nettle can soothe cramping and bloating, while also minimizing blood flow during menstruation due to its astringent capabilities. For women undergoing  menopause, stinging nettle is also useful as it can smooth the transition and act as a restorative so the hormonal shift isn*t as dramatic in the body.

Circulation: The combination of high vitamin C and iron content in stinging nettle makes it ideal for stimulating red blood cell production. Vitamin C optimizes iron uptake in the gut, while iron is a crucial component of hemoglobin. By increasing the RBC count in the body, circulation increases, wound healing speeds up, and the body*s extremities receive essential oxygenation to boost energy levels. For the same reason, stinging nettle is often recommended to relieve fatigue or anemia, which is characterized by general muscle weakness, exhaustion, cognitive difficulties, and headaches.

Kidney and Gallbladder Health: Stinging nettle has long been known as a diuretic substance, but it also affects the kidneys in a different way. Stinging nettle has nephridic qualities, meaning that it can help to break down stones in the kidney and gallbladder, preventing those painful conditions from worsening or requiring those stones to be either passed or surgically removed. Also, as a diuretic, stinging nettle helps to eliminate toxins quickly, thereby protecting against bladder infections and excess fluid retention (edema).

Anti-inflammatory Activity: Stinging nettle is a stimulant and rubefacient substance, making it very effective against various inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis or chronic muscle pain. Research has shown that stinging nettle tea or herbal supplementation can effectively treat gout, soothe muscle pain, and reduce symptoms of arthritis.

Osteoporosis and Bone Health: Although we don*t hear much about boron, it is still an important mineral element in our bodies that can be found in stinging nettle. Boron has been scientifically linked to maintaining calcium content in our bones, which means that stinging nettle can help slow the onset of osteoporosis. When you combine that effect with the hormone-regulating impact that stinging nettle has, which helps to regulate and monitor bone health as well, it seems like this herb truly can do it all.

Respiratory Issues:
Stinging nettle has also been connected to the treatment of a variety of respiratory conditions, including hay fever, asthma, and other seasonal allergies. Studies have shown that certain extract combinations from stinging nettle can significantly reduce allergic reactions in patients. Regular consumption of stinging nettle tea has been used to treat asthma in Australia for generations.

Heart Health:
It only makes sense that this amazing cure-all herb would also be able to positively affect the heart. Research has revealed that regular consumption of stinging nettle tea can help lower systolic blood pressure and relieve tension and stress on the cardiovascular system.

Prostate Health: Prostate enlargement and cancer are both serious factors to consider as men age, but stinging nettle has proven to be an effective means of preventing prostate growth. However, due to the chemical pathways that this treatment takes, stinging nettle can only prevent the growth, not reverse it once the growth factor and testosterone-stimulation has occurred.

Gastrointestinal Health:
Stinging nettle extract supplements have been suggested for reducing nausea and diarrhea, and as with the menstruation and menopausal effects, stinging nettle can also soothe ulcers and hemorrhoids.

Skin Health: When the extracts are applied to the skin, stinging nettle has been proven to reduce the severity of acne and can even prevent bacterial infections of various types. Due to its antioxidant properties, it can also speed healing, reduce the the appearance of scars and blemishes, and promote anti-aging to reduce wrinkles and age spots.

Garlicky Pesto Title
Pesto
Although most Seattleites find nettles at farmers* markets this time of year, they*re also often available at Whole Foods Markets. Buy a bunch when you can, and double or triple this recipe, as needed, and freeze some, because my fortune-telling powers tell me you*ll want to twirl the pesto up with long pasta again long after the season has passed. If you have time to be thoughtful and a bit patient, you can add toasted breadcrumbs, for a bit of crunch, or chopped sundried tomatoes.

Time: 25 minutes active time Makes: 1 generous cup

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 pound nettles
  • 4 large garlic cloves, smashed
  • 1/2 cup toasted pine nuts
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Freshly ground pepper
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 1/4 cups extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions:

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a simmer for the nettles. Add the nettles directly from their bag and cook, stirring continuously, for 2 minutes. (This denatures their sting.) Dump into a colander to drain. When the nettles are cool enough to handle, wrap them in a clean dishtowel and wring out as much moisture as possible, like you would for spinach. You*ll have about a cup of cooked, squished nettles.
  2. In the work bowl of a food processor fitted with the paddle attachment, whirl the garlic, pine nuts, salt, and pepper to taste until finely chopped. Add the nettles, breaking them up as you drop them in, and the lemon juice and whirl until finely chopped. With the machine running, add the oil in a slow, steady stream, and process until smooth. Add the cheese, pulse briefly, and season to taste with additional salt, pepper, or lemon juice.

Nettle Aloo title
nettle aloo
As an accompaniment to Indian food, aloo saag (potatoes and spinach) is a firm favourite. Here the spinach is replaced with blanched and chopped nettles which gives a wonderfully fresh, almost grassy flavour. It works.

Ingredients:

  • A large white onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
  • Teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • Two teaspoons black onion seeds
  • Two teaspoons methi (fenugreek seeds)
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2-3 potatoes, depending on size, peeled and diced into c.2cm
  • Nettles, lots.

Instructions:

  1. Blanch the nettles in boiling water then drain in a colander. Finely chop them and set them to one side.
  2. Boil the potatoes in salted water until just shy of being cooked. About 10 minutes should do it
  3. Fry the spices in oil, lower the heat then add the onion and cook until it softens. Add the garlic then the potatoes. Cook until they begin to colour and are soft throughout then add the chopped nettles. Let down with a little water if necessary, season and serve with whichever curries you desire.

How to avoid a cosmic fail.
Mercury is about to go retrograde on August 12. Again. And until September 5, we*ll all have to weather this signal-scrambling cosmic event. The Astro-Twins help your sign avoid a cosmic fail, so, uh, don*t do this.

Aries (March 31-April 20)
You love adding your two, even three, cents to any lively discussion Aries*and don*t let anyone ask you to stifle your strong opinions! But with Mercury retrograde in your sign this time, you could come across as heavy-handed and domineering.
Your ego is not your amigo, Ram. Aim for understanding instead of battling to be right. Otherwise, you could start a war on Twitter.

Taurus (April 21-May 20)
Energy vampires don*t always appear in obvious form, Taurus, nor do they respond to the old garlic and cross routine. So beware, Bull, or you could get drained dry by the perpetually freaked out friend. As she keeps digging herself deeper into the hole, you exhaust yourself picking up the pieces.
Set boundaries to preserve your sanity. And repeat after us: I will not stage an intervention before May 3.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

It*s not exactly a struggle for oh-so-charming you to gain VIP entry to the cool kids* club. But at what price? The lure of status could sweep away your good senses, Gemini. (And yes, we know*open bar*)
Don*t ditch the people who have earned their loyalty points to gain insider status with a new squad. Real friends are hard to come by.

Cancer (June 21-July 20)
Like signmate Solange, you deserve your seat at the table' good old boys* club, whatever! But with this Mercury retrograde falling in your tenth house of men, things could go awry with the guys.
"Don't share your trade secrets with a "bro-propriator," or spend a paycheck on golf clubs just to fit in. But don*t make assumptions either. That dude in the baseball cap might actually be a feminist too.

Leo (July 21-August 20)

Life is performance art and occasionally live theater*at least in the world of a flamboyant Leo. And with that come the costume changes.
But with Mercury retrograde in your ninth house of diversity, take extra care not to step in the cultural appropriation trap. (Leo Kylie
Jenner has certainly caught flak for her cornrows.) And sorry no, you shouldn't buy a full headdress for festival season. It's not an "homage."

Virgo (August 21-September 20)

With Mercury as your ruling planet, you have a PhD in retrogrades. You know better than to send a drunken Snapchat or email your boss or bae without a copy editor*s review. But with Mercury backing up through shade-throwing eighth house, you could shoot some daggers with your eyes.
Don't burn bridges with a 'subtle glance,' fix your face, Virgo!  Until May 3, keeping your expression cordial is a wise political move.

Libra (September 21-October 20)
Time heals all wounds, or so they say. And as a peace-loving Libra, you're generally eager to extend a post-breakup olive branch to an ex. But don*t! With this Mercury retrograde going down in your relationship house, reconciliation efforts could go all wrong.

Take off the rose-colored glasses. That unappreciative stoner who never bought you a damn meal was not 'the one that got away.'
Do not be a romantic revisionist, Libra, or you could mess up a good thing you've got going on in the present.
or you could mess up a good thing you've got going on in the present.

Scorpio (October 21-November 20)
Good help is hard to find--especially when you have the exacting standards of a Scorpio. And during this particular Mercury retrograde you will have zero patience for bad service or sub-par work.
But hang on before you read the waiter at your favorite restaurant or cut a colleague down to size. You might be justified, but you'll wind up looking like an asshole. Rewind and be kind. Everyone deserves one gentle warning, Scorpio.

Sagittarius (November 21-December 20)

Spring is in the air and you're feeling fine...justifiably so! And people keep showering you with compliments, a confidence boost that might lead you to live streaming your life like a VH-1 reality show.
But with Mercury retro in your fame zone, your messaging could be off. Stop the cameras and work on your branding. Schedule a photo shoot for after May 3 when Mercury corrects course and spares you a citation from the fashion police.

Capricorn (December 21-January 20)
Your sister's going through a breakup. You dad needs dental surgery. A cousin is flying in from out of state and needs a place to stay. Capricorn to the rescue? Uh-oh. With retrograde Mercury muddying the waters in your home and family zone, family could quickly turn into your f-word
Take off the cape and de-plane from your invisible jet, Wonder Woman. Sometimes it's enough to simply say, 'I understand' instead of rushing in to rescue all your relatives and exhausting yourself in the process.

Aquarius (January 21-February 20)
Stop! Don't send that Snap! This Mercury retrograde is a double whammy for Aquarian s since it's muddling messages in your third house of communication.
When it comes to all mobile communications, make sure you've checked the right recipients. Like, are you sexting Daniel...or Dad? Bitching about your boss...to your boss? This could get embarrassing. Rule of thumb(typing): Don't put anything racy or snarky in writing until after May 3.

Pisces (February 20-March 20
)
Oooh, look at what's being wheeled out at all the boutiques' floral print dresses for days!
You never met a sale rack you didn't like, Pisces. Or a consignment shop or antique outpost.
But with Mercury back spinning in your finance house, avoid any 'final sale' purchases like the plague. You might get stuck with a shrunken festival romper or a wrong-sized coffee table. Make sure to measure. It doesn't matter if it's Mid-century if it doesn't fit through your apartment door!
