Herb of the month olive leaf
Olive Leaf
Also known as- Olea europaea, Italian Olive, and Olive.

Introduction: The olive is a small evergreen tree native to Mediterranean regions, but naturalized to climates as varied as those of Australia, California, and Texas. The well-known green to blue-black fruit of this tree yields a useful, edible oil. Both the oil and the dried green-grayish colored leaves are used in herbal medicine.

Constituents: Apigenin, choline, cinchonine, luteolin, mannitol, olivin, tannins.

Parts Used: Dried leaves and leaf fragments.
Typical Preparations: Traditionally used as a tea, sometimes available in tea bags; also used with great success in extracts and capsules.

Summary:
Olive leaf teas have been used for thousands of years to lower fevers, and olive leaf poultices are among the oldest therapies for infections of the skin. Olive leaf is associated with a variety of modern medical claims, some of them backed up with scientific evidence:

* Antibacterial effects.
Elenoic acid from olives is known to be antibacterial (killing both infectious and helpful bacteria), but the elenoic acid in olive leaf may be broken down in the process of making the tea. Olive leaf poultices may heal skin by encouraging circulation rather than by killing bacteria.
* Cardiovascular effects. Oleuropein in olive leaf and in olives may prevent LDL cholesterol from oxidizing into a form that can form atherosclerotic plaques. The chemical also lowers blood pressure, although only slightly (3 to 8 mm/Hg after 3 to 4 weeks use).
* Diabetes. Olive leaf extracts have been shown in laboratory studies to lower blood sugars, but their use in treating diabetes in humans is not well documented.

Precautions: Olive leaf tea should be taken with meals. Safety of the herb during pregnancy has not been established.

  1. Pick fresh olive leaves from your tree making sure there are no spots.
  2. Fresh picked healthy leaves are the best but if you don't have a tree you can use dried leaves too.
  3. Chop the leaves finely and put them into a glass mason or canning jar or a jar with a lid that will not rust.  Do not use plastic.
  4. Next, pour a good, strong grain 40 % alcohol, (Vodka works well), over the leaves, completely covering them.  Be surethey are completely covered.  (Roughly 1 part leaves to 3 parts alcohol).
  5. If you are using dried leaves you will need to add more alcohol as the dried leaves absorb more and you need to make surethey stay covered.( About 1 part leaves to 5 parts alcohol )
  6. Now cover your cover the jar with a tight fitting non rusting lid.
  7. Shake well and put in a dark place.  the leaves will need to soak for 4 to 6 weeks.  Shake every other day and make sure the leaves are completely covered.  The alcohol will siphon and extract the active constituents from the leaves.
  8. Use cheesecloth or all natural non colored coffee filters to strain your extract into another glass container making sure to get every last drop by wringing the filter or cloth.
  9. Now funnel your tincture into smaller amber bottles with dropper lids and store in a cool dark place.
  10. You can keep and store for 3 years.  Health benefits of Olive Leaf.
  11. You can keep your used leaves and add them immediately to your next batch, this will make it even stronger.
  12. You can do this with any fresh herb but make sure that chemicals or fungicides were not used.  It's best to use what comes from your own garden or a trusted source.
Olive leaf extract
olive leaf cough drip Title

.
Ingredients:
  •   1 cup of water infused with herbs. I used slippery elm, coltsfoot, cinnamon, elderberry and olive leaf.
  •   1 1/2 cups of honey
  •   A candy thermometer (not necessary but very helpful!)
  •   a medium size sauce pan
  •   Silicon candy molds (not needed but helpful)
Instructions:
  1. Boil 2 cups of water and infuse with desired herbs. I used about * cup of each herb for a really potent cough drop, but as little as 1 tablespoon of each herb is effective. To infuse: Pour boiling water over herbs. I put herbs in a muslin bag to make straining easier. Let steep for 20 minutes and strain out herbs (or remove bag).
  2. Pour 1 cup of the herb infused water and 1.5 cups of honey into a medium saucepan and turn on medium high heat. (save the extra liquid and mix with equal parts raw honey for a simple cough syrup)
  3. Stir the honey/herb mixture over medium high heat until it reaches 300 degrees. If you don*t have a candy thermometer, this usually takes about 30 minutes and can be tested by dropping a drop of the mixture in to ice water to see if it immediately hardens. It should harden to the point that it breaks if dropped on the counter. You can also tell because the mixture will start to foam and separate. At this point, it is vital to remove it from the heat quickly so it does not burn.
  4. Pour into candy molds, or pour into a large baking sheet that has been greased with coconut oil or that has a silicon baking mat on it.
  5. Let cool until it can be touched and molded and immediately and quickly form into lozenges with your hands (you might need help to do this quickly enough).
  6. Put finished cough drops/lozenges on a silicon mat or piece of parchment paper to cool.
  7. When completely cool, I toss in a mixture of powdered slippery elm and stevia to keep from getting sticky in humidity.
  8. Use as needed for coughing, congestion or sore throat.

Notes:
Any herbs can be used. I picked the combination above to help sooth coughing, congestion and sore throat while boosting the immune system. I get all herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs. I*ve only had these last about a week in my house because my kids eat them that quickly, so I don*t know their shelf life past a week.

SuperMoon Meaning for October 2016
Keeper of The Diamond Light Codes with Maria Charito Arabes. October 1 at 12:43am *

Supermoon October 16, 2016

Our Super-moon is on the horizon and it's super-charged too.  This Full Moon is going to be a spectacular visual spectacle, so make sure you go outside and look at the sky!  As with all Full Moons, it's bringing your emotions to light.

During this super-moon, the Sun will be in relationship oriented Libra, and our Moon will be in self-asserting Aries. And yeah, you're feeling it!
Aries teaches you to believe in yourself and never diminish your power. Libra teaches you how to have relationship harmony, often through compromise.

What's coming to light in your life now are all the ways you have been diminishing your power in order to please others. And, also, how you can bring more relationship harmony into your life by staying centered within yourself.
it's important to let go of what no longer serves you, and let in the light of the Divine.

Here are some suggestions for you:
Release any tendencies of suppressing your needs to please others, and allow yourself to make your happiness a priority.
Let go of your reactions of defense or blame, and remind yourself to stay calm during chaos.
Unburden yourself of your negative feelings towards others, and reclaim your responsibility to be the steward of your happiness.
Remove yourself from any relationships with people who don't support you, and allow positive loving people into your life who love you for who you are.

This is a potent time to reclaim your power and allow your light to radiate more brightly. Shine on!

Happy 2016 everyone! Its hard to believe that 2015 is over - frankly, I couldn’t wait until it was over.  There was difficulty, elation, fun and a lot of growth this last year.  There was, as most of you know, a health scare that could have made a huge impact on my life - but everything turned out for the best!  Because of the positive outcome of that situation, I have been going ahead with some fabulous plans for the future!  I can’t tell you how excited I am to continue my business into the 26th year; its been the best of all possible worlds, and I truly love what I do!
