March Herb of the Month
Also known as:  Sambucus spp (Nigra for berries and Canadensis for flowers) American Elder, Common Elder, Black Elder, Bour Tree, and European Black Elder.

Introduction: European elder is a plant native to Europe, Northern Africa, and Western-and Central Asia. Its flowers and berries have a long history of use in traditional European medicine. Elder berries have also been used for making preserves, wines, winter cordials, and for adding flavor and color to other wines. Native Americans used the flowers, berries, and bark of elderberry trees to treat fevers and joint pain for hundreds of years, but elderberry's real claim to fame is as a cure for the flu. Israeli researchers have developed five formulas based on elderberry fruit that have been clinically proven to prevent and ameliorate all kinds of influenza.

Constituents:
Potassium nitrate, sambucin, sambunigrin, sugars. The complex sugars of the berries are the immune-active fraction.

Parts Used: Most commonly the flowers or berries. Dried fruits are less bitter than fresh. The branches and leaves are poisonous. The small stem which is sometimes left on the berry is safe.

Typical Preparations: Teas, tinctures, encapsulations, syrups, wine, cordials, and even ketchup, often combined with propolis or Echinacea.

Summary: Extensive research show that elder stop the production of hormone-like cytokines that direct a class of white blood cells known as neutrophils to cause inflammation, especially in influenza and arthritis. On the other hand, elder increases the production non-inflammatory infection-fighting cytokines as much as 10 fold. Elder berries are known to be effective against eight strains of influenza. This suggests that elder be superior to vaccines in preventing flu, because flu vaccines are only effective against known strains of flu, whereas the virus is continually mutating to new strains. Vaccines have another draw back: over half of people who get them report side effects. Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, of Hadassah-Hebrew University in Israel found that elderberry disarms the enzyme viruses use to penetrate healthy cells in the lining of the nose and throat. Taken before infection, it prevents infection. Taken after infection, it prevents spread of the virus through the respiratory tract. In a clinical trial, 20% of study subjects reported significant improvement within 24 hours, 70% by 48 hours, and 90% claimed complete cure in three days. In contrast, subjects receiving the placebo required 6 days to recover.

Precautions: None for flowers. According to the "Botanical Safety Handbook", the unripe and raw fruit, seeds, bark and leaves contain a component, sambunigrin, which may cause vomiting or severe diarrhea if ingested.

Merriam-Webster defines the soul as "the immaterial essence, animating principle, or actuating cause of an individual life."  It's that part of you that drives you for life.  So having a sleeping soul is like sitting in a car with no gas, no steering wheel, and flat tires. You aren't really going anywhere. Here's how to determine if you're in desperate need of a spiritual awakening.

1. Authority.

People with dormant souls don't really believe they have much reason to question authority figures or the people in charge. They trust their parents, their teachers, people who give them advice, implicitly.
Lifestyle blog Power of Positivity explains that an awakened soul "takes nothing as truth until [they've] looked into it and decided on it for yourself"

2. Trends.

People with awakened souls don't just go along with what everyone thinks is cool, the music everyone likes, the ideas everyone accepts. They forge their own way.  If you find yourself following trends, your inner soul may still be sleeping. Power of Positivity elaborates, "You stand strong in your truth even if you only represent a handful of people who know what you do," when your soul is awakened.

3. Change.

People with awakened souls have accepted that change is coming whether they want it to or not, and they are ready to jump on board the change train. A dormant soul however is fairly accepting of the status quo, doesn't see any reason for things to be changing, and accepts the change imposed onto them as completely acceptable.  Someone with an awakened soul "probably can't understand why this world operates how it does," according to Power of Positivity. Awakened souls are always questioning.

4. People.

A dormant soul is part of the crowd, while an awakened soul is at the front of the parade. They're leaders. And according to Power of Positivity, if your soul is awake, "you sometimes feel very alone and isolated in society, but know that most leaders do"  It isn't easy leading the revolution, but someone has got to do it. "Even if you take the road less traveled," the site continues, " you feel honored to know what you do and have the fortitude to stick to your guns no matter what."

5. Closed mind.

An awakened soul has a mind that's like a sieve, filled with many, many holes allowing new information and ideas to penetrate but not get stuck. The things you need to know will catch, and the things you don't will push through.  A dormant soul will be entirely closed off to everything, no matter what it is. Even if that idea is something you might have actually come to agree with, you're set in your ways, and have no plans of changing or even hearing something new.

6. Conversation.

Dormant souls like engaging in conversation, but nothing too deep. You like to keep the conversation light, airy, and buoyant. But fairly awakened souls know that there are deeper things that need to be discussed.  They aren't fans of small talk. Power of Positivity explains,"You probably tell people what they need to hear," if your soul is awakened, "not what they want to hear."

The 4 Popular Health Benefits of Elderberry

Immune-system Booster

This shrub typically grows to approximately ten feet tall and reveals yellow and white flowers in early summer, followed by strong blue or black berries which generally ripen around September.

According to Michael Murray, ND, writer of *The Pill Book Guide to Natural Medicines* just blue and black berries have medicinal qualities and have been employed in folk medicine since the Romans. Elderberries are rich in flavonoids that are organic compounds with antioxidant qualities that safeguards cells against injury or infections. Elderberry also includes vitamin A, B, considerable quantities of vitamin C, and amino acids. All these nutrients can allow you to stay healthy by improving your immune system.

Colds and Flu
Elderberry might help treat cold and flu symptoms by lowering congestion and making you sweat more. One study indicated that a standardized elderberry extract, Sambucol, could shorten the term of influenza by about 3 times. Sambucol also comprises other herbs plus vitamin C, therefore nobody knows whether elderberry alone might have exactly the same impact.

Another preliminary study found that the lozenge with elderberry extract (ViraBLOC) helped decrease the length of the flu within 24-hours of symptoms beginning. Within the laboratory, one study indicated that elderberry could destroy the H1N1 virus (*swine flu*) in test tubes, but investigators do not know whether it will work against H1N1 in individuals.

Weight Loss

Elderberry might assist you with your weight loss efforts, based on a study performed by C. Chrubasik in the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the University of Freiburg in Germany. The analysis included 80 individuals who had daily elderberry juice enriched with elderberry blossom and berry powder extracts, together with asparagus-based extracts. The authors found this formula substantially enhanced not just one*s fat percentage, but it also helped the participant*s blood pressure and their mental and physical state. Further studies are still required to support these findings.

Sinus Infections
One study analyzed the utilization of the proprietary product, Sinupret (which contains flowers from the Elderberry plant), to treat bacterial sinusitis in addition to the antibiotic (doxycycline or Vibramycin) along with a decongestant. Individuals who took the blend did better when compared with all those who didn*t take Sinupret. So nobody knows whether using elderberry all by itself would work too, however, since Sinupret comprises other herbs in addition to elderberry.

Elderberry Popsicles
Elderberry Popsicle Recipe
(Soothing for Sore Throats)

Prep 10 min. * Total 10 mins *
Author Katie Wells (Wellness Mama)

These delicious elderberry Popsicle are packed with nutrient dense ingredients and antioxidants. We love them for soothing a sore throat or during colds and flu.

Ingredients

  •     3 T elderberries
  •     3/4 cup filtered water
  •     1/2 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen
  •     2 T raw honey
  •     1 T grass-fed gelatin
  •     1 cups coconut water or coconut juice
  •     The juice of 1 lemon (or to taste)

Instructions

  1.     In a small saucepan combine the elderberries and water. Bring it to a boil, then reduce and gently simmer for 15 minutes. You're making elderberry tea here, just extra strength.
  2.     Strain the elderberries from the water with a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Make sure you really squeeze them to get the juice out. Pour the elderberry tea into back into the clean saucepan.
  3.     Sprinkle the gelatin over the elderberry tea and let it absorb for a few minutes.  If your raw honey is really thick, then add it too after the gelatin has gelled a bit. Gently heat the mixture over very low heat, stirring slowly just until everything is combined and melted. You don't want to overheat this, or the honey won't be raw anymore!
  4.     To your blender add the coconut water and blue-berries, then blend until smooth. Pour the coconut mixture and the  rest of the ingredients into the elderberry mixture, and stir just until combined.
  5.     Pour the elderberry Popsicle mix into your favorite popsicle molds and freeze until firm.
