Also known as- Scutellaria lateriflora, Scutellaria, Scullcap, Scute, Blue Skullcap, Mad-Dog Skullcap, and Madweed.
Skullcap is an herbaceous perennial mint with ridged leaves and tiny blue flowers, growing 1 to 4 feet (25 cm to 1 m) high. Various species of skullcap are important in Traditional Chinese Medicine as herbs that clear heat and dry dampness. The use of herb dates back at least two thousand years.
Traditional Chinese medicine teaches that skullcap is most useful for "draining fire" from the "upper burner," for patterns of symptoms including high fever, irritability, thick mucus, or hot sores and swelling. The herb is used to "dry dampness" from the stomach or intestines, treating any kind of digestive upset that stifling the urge to drink fluids or causes inflammation of the urinary tract. Skullcap also treats the symptoms of emotional excess "rising" in the body to cause blushing, flushing, irritability, or headache.
Baicalein, baicalin, wogonin, wogonoside, neobaicalein, roxylin aglucurenoide, camphesterol, beta-sitosterol, and benzoic acid.
The above-ground parts of the plant, dried.
Traditionally used as a tea or tincture; can be used in capsule form. The tea should be drunk hot. Combined with heal-all (prunella) for treating nervous conditions, peony for treating tension in the abdomen during infection. Traditional Chinese Medicine teaches that skullcap should be "fried" (browned in a pan without oil) for use in stopping bleeding.
Over 100 scientific studies confirm skullcap's:
- Antibacterial effect. The species of skullcap inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, among others. Skullcap may be useful when there is antibiotic resistance.
- Bleary effect. Tinctures (but not teas) increase flow of bile and lower cholesterol.
- Gastrointestinal effects. Teas and tinctures slow intestinal movement.
- * Hypotensive effect. Teas, tincture, and alcohol extracts are known lower blood pressure in dogs, cats, rabbits, and humans. The herb lowers blood pressure by dilating blood vessels, potentially lowering risk of heart attack and stroke.
- Immunomodulatory effect. Skullcap contains compounds that inhibit the release of enzymes by mast cells, effectively acting as an antihistamine.
- Temperature regulatory effects. As far back 1935, scientists have confirmed that skullcap can lower fevers.

- 1 Tbsp skullcap (herb)
- 2 c boiling water

- Skullcap was used by some Native American tribes as an emmenagogue to bring young girls into womanhood.
- It was also traditionally used to bring on visions (in large doses) during spiritual ceremonies.
- It was once used as a treatment for rabies and schizophrenia (hence the names maddog skullcap, maddog weed, and mad weed.

How to make tinctures
- Well, you will need a 1/2 pint jar, 1/2 cup of dried skullcap leaves, and 100 proof vodka to fill your jar. Do start with a small jar, since you don*t yet know how effective this tincture will be for you. Start with a small amount and experiment with it. If it works well, you can make a larger amount the next time.
- Fill the jar 1/2 way with dried skullcap leaves. Pour 100 proof vodka over the leaves until the jar is full. Stir and cap your tincture in progress. Label the jar "Skullcap" (Scutellaria lateriflora) tincture, with the date 6 weeks from now to decant it. Or just put today's date, and that will help remind you when to decant. Open and stir your skullcap tincture every day for the first week. Allow the skullcap tincture to sit and infuse for 5 more weeks. Shaking the jar or stirring it every few days is a great idea. Keep the tincture out on the counter so you'll be reminded to do so. However, make sure it is kept out of direct sunlight. Then* Strain the skullcap tincture into cheesecloth that is set into a strainer. Then, compost the leaves.
- You can clean out the jar you were brewing it in, and pour your finished tincture in the same jar for storage. Store out of direct sunlight. LABEL your jar "Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) dried in 50% alc.", Pour some into a tincture bottle for ease of use. LABEL the little bottle if that*s what you use. You can also use any bottle or jar and administer with a teaspoon.
- That's all there is to it. Reach for your tincture when you need to in the middle of the night, or if you*re going through a particularly stressful time in your life, you may want to take a dropper full of tincture 3 or 4 times a day - at meal times and just before bed. It's a great idea to put it in a little warm water when you are taking it. However, some folks just put it directly in their mouths. The tincture will last for several years, so when the stress eases, simply tuck the bottle away in your medicine cabinet until you need to pull it out again. Skullcap tincture is not a remedy we use with our kids personally. A good calming remedy for kids is another lesson for another time.

Even if you use mantras and convince internally something to yourself what will emerge eventually is your true beliefs. For example, if you hope to attract wealth and abundance, but your subconscious continues to focus on the things that you miss, you will not attract wealth, and even things that you miss. In this case you do not get what you want, but rather continue to burden your subconscious mind with things that do not pay adequate attention. This is the main reason why the Law of Attraction does not work for most of people.

These thoughts and feelings are often hidden in our subconscious, which further increases fears or lack of abundance. The key to overcoming this situation is to set up and firmly believe permanent positive beliefs.
