April editor Letter
Greetings,

Spring is here!!! We are officially into the second quarter of this year, 2016.

So much has happened already and we don't even know for sure how the next nine months will treat us.  Therefore, I will be, beginning this issue, sharing with you the information needed to survive for months in the future should we find ourselves in an emergency situation.

I will begin teaching how to stock and line your shelves with the food and water, paper goods, as well as the things you will need for medicine.

It never hurts to have this knowledge, so you can care for your family.  I will bring, to you, information on the level of no electricity, gas or any way to bake, but you will  have what you need in the way of surviving.

I have in the past given you information on the necessary oils needed in your home for many things, Now is the time to begin to stock those essential oils that can even be used for first aide.

Here is a quick list of can't be without.

  • Lavender, Tea Tree,
  • Peppermint, Basil, Lemon
  • Eucalyptus radiata, Geranium.

I will include in the "Info Highway", the information on how to set up a Natural first aide kit and the information on what the oils are used for.

Good luck, and blessings to you on your new journey.

Thank you,
The Editor

Herb of the month lavender
lavender bundle
Also known as- Lavandula angustifolia, English lavender, Broad-leaf Lavender, Grande Lavander and True Lavender

Introduction
Lavender is aromatic perennial evergreen shrub. Its woody stems bear lavender or purple flowers from late spring to early autumn, although there are varieties with blossoms of white or pink.  Lavender is native to the Mediterranean, but now cultivated in cool-winter, dry-summer areas in Europe and the Western United States. Lavender was used as an after-bath perfume by the Romans, who gave the herb its name from the Latin lavare, to wash.

Constituents
Essential oil containing borneol, camphor, geraniol, and linalool, also coumarins, caryophyllene, tannins, and other antioxidant compounds.

Parts Used
Flowers.

Typical Preparations
Teas, tinctures, and added to baked goods. Cosmetically it has a multitude of uses and can be included in ointments for pain and burn relief.

Summary
The German Commission E commended lavender for treating insomnia, nervous stomach, and anxiety. The British Herbal Phamacopoeia lists lavender as a treatment for flatulence, colic, and depressive headaches, and many modern herbal practitioners use the herb to treat migraines in menopause. In Spain, lavender is added to teas to treat diabetes and insulin resistance.

Precautions
For best results, avoid heating the herb with boiling water.

Lavender Salve banner
lavender bundle pic
This lavender salve is one of my all-time favorite things to make. It smells divine, but is not over powering. Perfect for dry hands, it also relieves rough patches on elbows and knees.

The best part: it is EASY to make. This recipe only contains 4 ingredients and a few simple steps.
If you have been intimidated by the thought of making your own body products, fear no more! This one is an excellent way to start.

It also makes a great gift

Ingredients
(Makes * cup, enough for two, small, 2-ounce jars)

  • 1/4 cup dried lavender flowers
  • 5 to 7 drops lavender essential oil
  • 2 tablespoons grated beeswax (Have a separate grater dedicated to grating beeswax * it does not come off! Don*t use a grater you want to grate cheese on again. You can always avoid grating by using beeswax pastilles.)
  • 1/2 cup virgin olive oil

Tools

  • Heavy saucepan
  • Glass liquid measuring cup
  • Clean jars for finished salve (I use 2 ounce jars)
  • cheesecloth
  • Rubber band
  • tea towels

Method

  1. Pour the oil into a heavy saucepan.
  2. Add lavender flowers. Stir to combine.
  3. Warm slowly over low heat. Once warm, turn off heat and let sit for 20 minutes..
  4. Place cheesecloth over measuring cup and secure with a rubber band.
  5. Strain lavender/oil mixture through cheesecloth.
  6. Once most of the oil has dripped through, remove rubber band and pull the cheesecloth around the lavender. Squeeze any excess oil into the measuring cup.
  7. (Have a towel nearby; your hands are going to be oily!)
  8. Put a few inches of water into pan, place cup (with olive oil) into pan. Warm slowly over low heat until the water is simmering.
  9. While the water is warming, add the 5 drops of lavender essential oil and 2 tablespoons of beeswax to the olive oil.
  10. Let this mixture sit in simmering water and stir occasionally until the beeswax has melted. This takes about 10 minutes.
  11. Once melted, pour into clean jars.
  12. llow to cool completely before putting the lid on. Once cooled completely, the salve may have a dip in the top. But I don*t mind that. It shows it*s homemade.

Keeps for 6 months to a year.

Lavender herbal tincture hdr
lavender tincture
Supplies:

  • Lavender flowers, dried or fresh
  • Alcohol, either vodka 80 or 100 proof, or other woodgrain
  • Clean glass jar with tight fitting lids
  • Filter material, such as cheesecloth, muslin, unbleached coffee filters or a fine sieve
  • Blank labels

Instructions

  1. Chop! Chop up clean herbs to start to release essential oils and increase surface area.
  2. For fresh herbs fill the jar 2/3 to 3/4 of the way full, no need to pack it in. If using roots of some plant, fill the jar with less, 1/4 to 1/2.
  3. For dried herbs, fill jar 1/2 to 3/4 full.
  4. Pour! Pour alcohol over the herbs in the jar. The goal is to cover the contents completely. For roots, consider that dried version will increase in size as they reconstitute.
  5. Your jar will be full, but not jammed packed. The Herbs should move around when gently agitated or swirled.
  6. Macerate! Rest! Steep! Leave it alone! Let the jar sit for 2-6 weeks, agitating it most days of the week, if able. Do some research on length of time to let various herbs sit in alcohol, particular if pursuing medicinal applications. You might start extracting other components that are less desirable.
  7. Strain! Pour your tincture jar contents though the filter. Muslin works great as do coffee filters. Squeeze the filter to get as much liquid out as possible. The liquid will be colored, no longer clear. Alternatively, you could grind up the contents a bit more and then strain and filter.
  8. Store! Store the strained tincture in amber glass to protect from light or in a cool, dark place if in clear glass. Alcohol tinctures may last for nearly 4-6 years, glycerin may last only 2-3 years. Use your brain though and if it looks funky don*t use* be sure to label what it is and when prepared. Don*t rely on your nose.

Here is a list of things that are a great addition to any first aid kit. Some (like bandages) are much more necessary than others (like a magnifying glass) but each could come in handy in certain situations!

  1. Bandages of all shapes and sizes. Think tiny cuts or splinters to larger wounds, joint/knee/knuckle bandages, butterfly bandages, blister protectors, etc
  2. Gauze and muslin rolls, with silver attachment hooks. Great for steadying sprained joints and supporting affected limbs
  3. Tape, athletic and waterproof. Hold bandages together, waterproof is especially good for on-the-go kids

  5. Finger Splints. Steadies joints of fingers that may be dislocated or broken
  6. Scissors and pocket knife. Useful for cutting gauze or muslin wraps, or possibly trimming bandages. Can also be used to cut fabric to be used as a tourniquet.
  7. Tweezers. Great for splinter removal
  8. Disposable gloves. Especially important for handling open wounds, can also be useful if someone has a rash of some kind (like poison ivy exposure)
  9. Cotton balls and cotton swabs (q-tips). Can help clean wounds and apply healing agents
  10. Magnifying Glass. Helpful for seeing small splinters
  11. Thermometer. For taking temperatures, of course!
  12. Tissues. To dry little tears :) Also good to use to blot smaller bleeding wounds.
  13. Smelling Salts. For use if someone loses consciousness.
  14. Instant Ice Pack. Great for bruising, athletic injury, concussions, or bumps or any kind
  15. Emergency Blanket. Especially helpful in an inclement weather situation, or if someone is in shock

Happy 2016 everyone! Its hard to believe that 2015 is over - frankly, I couldn’t wait until it was over.  There was difficulty, elation, fun and a lot of growth this last year.  There was, as most of you know, a health scare that could have made a huge impact on my life - but everything turned out for the best!  Because of the positive outcome of that situation, I have been going ahead with some fabulous plans for the future!  I can’t tell you how excited I am to continue my business into the 26th year; its been the best of all possible worlds, and I truly love what I do!
